Dundee University Boat Club

Freshers

So, you want to row… (Calendar page for training sessions)

What do I need to do?

Well, you’ve done the hard part – you need to be at the University of Dundee. So, congratulations! Now enjoy it – and here are a few reasons why you should enjoy it with us:

Experience?

Never rowed before? Rowing is a fantastic sport to take up at university, as many people come never having been near a boat. There’ll be plenty of others who are equally as oblivious to ‘bow’ and ‘stroke’ side, and the club is very keen to teach beginners to row. We race throughout the year at Glasgow, Strathclyde, Aberdeen, and Inverness, so if you join in September, you could be racing by October!

Got a ton of experience? We’re a growing club, and making a name for ourselves in Scotland and amongst Scottish unis. We’d love to have you on board.

Commitment?

Rowing can be as much or as little commitment as you want. Admittedly it can become a bit of a drug, but we encourage you to train as much or as little as you like, and we have a number of purely social members. The club rows every Wednesday (when the whole university has the afternoon off for sports) and Saturday, but for those who want to put a bit more in, training can be arranged pretty much any time of the week, at insane hours in the morning or late into the languid summer evenings. We also run Circuit training on Thursday nights, which everyone is welcome to attend. And of course, there are many, many social nights throughout the year – far from compulsory, but certainly a highlight.

Rewards?

Some do it for the medals. Some do it for the fitness. Everyone does it for the banter. DUBC is an exciting, close-knit and friendly, forward-looking community. Rowing is both challenging and rewarding, and we hope that you will gain as much as you can from your time with DUBC as our previous members have.

What next?

Below is an initial timetable of events throughout September: just turn up to any of them, and meet the club! If you’re not sure what you’ll need with you, there’s also a handy kit-list below.

Finally, don’t hesitate to contact any of the committee members with any questions you may have: to ease you into the club is our Novice Convenor (myself, Jake), the point of contact for all our new members, and the rest of the bunch can be found on our committee page.

Matriculation

Matriculation now restricted to Fridays, must be done for insuarance purposes. Student membership fee is Ł40, cox/social fee is Ł20 and associate membership for anyone else is Ł60. Once matriculated all new members must complete a swim test for insurance purposes. Nothing to stress out about and we will let you know of the details after matriculation.

Race Licences

A race licence is required from all members of the club if they wish to race at all this year.  Which you should!  They cost Ł25 and last you until Christmas of next year.  Basically this covers your insurance for racing on other rivers around Scotland etc.

Kit List

What you need to bring for Rowing,

Complete change of clothes

Towel

Waterproof Jacket

A positive attitude

The best clothes to wear when rowing are tight fitting, but shorts and t-shirt/sweatshirt are fine to start off in. If you have technical tops/cycling shorts these are ideal.

After you have decided whether you want to continue rowing we will be able to help you buy rowing specific clothing. Please do not go and buy loads of rowing kit until you know that you enjoy the sport.
